In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill establishing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday. The holiday was first observed in 1986, and is celebrated in the U.S. each year on the third Monday in January (close to the date of King’s actual birthday, January 15).

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister, a leader of the African American Civil Rights Movement, and a great social activist.  His support of nonviolent protest helped advance the cause of civil rights, and contributed to making him an iconic figure and symbol of freedom. King’s  speeches, including the famous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered during the March on Washington in 1963, established him as one of America’s greatest orators.
